Conservative Treatments for Varicose Veins – What Are Your Options?

Medically Reviewed by Dr Stephen Goode, MBChB, MRCS (Eng), FRCR, PhD

Not everyone with varicose veins will need a procedure. At HHC Vein Clinics we offer tailored advice on conservative management. For some patients, especially in the early stages, non-surgical approaches can help relieve symptoms and slow progression.

Understanding Conservative Management

Conservative treatment doesn’t mean ignoring the problem—it means managing it with lifestyle changes, supportive therapies, and monitoring. For many, this can be the first step before considering a walk-in walk-out procedure like EVLA or sclerotherapy.

Common Non-Surgical Approaches

  • Compression Stockings: These support your veins and improve blood flow. They can reduce swelling and aching, especially if worn daily. We work closely with Veinology™ to supply our top of the range class 2 compression stockings for our patients.
  • Exercise and Movement: Regular walking and leg movement stimulate the calf muscle pump and improve venous circulation.
  • Weight Management: Losing excess weight reduces pressure on your veins.
  • Leg Elevation: Resting with your legs elevated above heart level can reduce swelling.
  • Avoiding Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Try to move every 30–60 minutes if your job is sedentary or standing-based.
  • Skin Care: Keeping the skin moisturised prevents dryness and irritation over affected veins

When Conservative Treatment Isn’t Enough

While these measures can ease symptoms, they don’t correct the underlying vein reflux. If your discomfort persists, or if you’re noticing skin changes, bulging veins, or night cramps, it may be time to consider minimally invasive treatments. Our consultant-led team, headed by Dr Stephen Goode, can guide you through your options with clarity and care.

Tailored Advice at HHC Vein Clinics

Every patient is different. At your initial consultation, we’ll assess your symptoms and perform a duplex ultrasound scan. This gives us a detailed map of your vein function, helping us determine whether conservative care is appropriate—or if a more definitive solution would benefit you.
