What Is a Venous Duplex Ultrasound and Why Is It Important?

Medically Reviewed by Dr Stephen Goode, MBChB, MRCS (Eng), FRCR, PhD

In the realm of modern varicose vein care, no diagnostic tool is more powerful than the venous duplex ultrasound. At HHC Vein Clinics— serving patients across the East Midlands including Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Sheffield and Lincoln—this scan is the cornerstone of how we understand what’s really going on beneath the surface of your legs.

What Is a Venous Duplex Ultrasound?

A venous duplex ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive scan that shows us both the structure of your veins and the way blood flows through them. It combines traditional ultrasound with Doppler technology to assess how well your veins are working and whether blood is flowing in the correct direction.

What Our Consultants Are Looking For

During the scan, we assess the great and small saphenous veins (the major superficial veins of the leg) as well as any tributaries that may be causing problems. We’re specifically looking for abnormalities of the veins and signs of venous reflux—this is where blood flows backward due to faulty valves, creating pressure, swelling, and those bulging surface veins.

Why It Matters for Your Treatment Plan

Without a duplex ultrasound, treatment is guesswork. What looks like a simple thread vein might be the tip of the iceberg. The scan allows us to target the exact veins that are malfunctioning, whether that’s above or below the knee, deep or superficial. It helps us plan the most effective and minimally invasive treatment for long-term results.

Real-Time, Consultant-Led Analysis

At HHC Vein Clinics, your scan is performed and interpreted by experienced clinicians, including Consultant Endovenous Specialist Dr Stephen Goode. We explain your results during the consultation and show you the anatomy on screen so you can understand exactly what’s happening in your legs.

What to Expect During the Scan

The scan takes around 20–30 minutes. You’ll be asked to stand or lie in different positions while we gently move the probe over your skin. It’s completely painless, and there’s no need for fasting or preparation.
