Blood Thinners and Hair Loss

Medically Reviewed by Dr Ali, FRCP (Edinburgh), FRCP (London), MBBS, MRCS, LRCP, DCH, DRCOG, MRCGP

As people with multiple co morbidities such as Atrial fibrillation now often present with androgenetic alopecia and low esteem and often depression as hair loss is another blow to their confidence which is ignored

For Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), such as rivaroxaban, apixaban, and dabigatran, are not commonly associated with hair loss (alopecia) as a side effect. However, hair loss has been reported with some anticoagulants, such as warfarin and heparin, due to their effects on hair follicle growth cycles or nutrient absorption.

Hair loss from DOACs is rare and not well-documented, but individual responses to medications vary. If you suspect a DOAC is causing hair loss, consider the following steps:
1. Rule Out Other Causes: Hair loss can be caused by stress, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes, or underlying medical conditions.
2. Consult Your Doctor: Your healthcare provider can review your medication and potentially switch you to a different anticoagulant if needed.
3. Investigate Timing: Determine if hair loss began after starting the medication, as this might indicate a link.

If the issue persists, a dermatologist may help identify the cause and recommend appropriate treatments. At HHC we care about your safety and screen your medical history for the best outcome.
