Can Coffee Make Hair Grow

Medically Reviewed by Dr Ali, FRCP (Edinburgh), FRCP (London), MBBS, MRCS, LRCP, DCH, DRCOG, MRCGP

Drinking coffee alone won’t directly regrow hair, but caffeine, when used topically, has been shown in several studies to stimulate hair growth and help reduce hair loss.

What the Science Says About Caffeine & Hair:

1. Caffeine Blocks DHT

  • DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a hormone linked to androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss).
  • Caffeine may counteract the effects of DHT in the hair follicle, helping to extend the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle.

2. Increases Follicle Activity

  • A 2007 German study (Tobin et al., Int J Dermatol) found that caffeine stimulated hair shaft elongation in lab tests, especially in male patients with pattern baldness.
  • It also appeared to promote keratinocyte proliferation (the cells that make up most of the hair shaft).

Topical vs. Drinking Coffee

Topical Caffeine (More Effective):

  • Found in caffeine shampoos and serums
  • Delivers caffeine directly to the follicle
  • Needs to stay on the scalp for a few minutes to be effective

Drinking Coffee (Supportive, but Limited):

  • Coffee has antioxidants and polyphenols that support general health
  • Too much caffeine (especially over 400mg/day) can increase cortisol, which in turn may contribute to telogen effluvium (stress-related shedding)
  • So moderation is key

Conclusion:

  • Caffeine may support hair growth, but only when applied topically in the right formulation
  • Drinking coffee in moderation may support overall wellness, but won’t treat hair loss on its own
  • For significant or persistent hair thinning, medical treatments like PRP, minoxidil, finasteride, or microneedling offer better outcomes
